Giới thiệu Enterprise HDD

Thông thường trong 1 enterprise server, enterprise hard drives (HDD) chiếm 2/3 giá thành.

Câu hỏi 1: Tại sao servers cần enterprise HDD?

1. Server chạy liên tục không ngừng nghỉ.

2. Server thường được tận dụng tối đa nên có workload cao: >80%

3. Server rất quan trọng đối với doanh nghiệp.

Câu hỏi 2: Enterprise HDD có những ưu điểm gì?

1. Độ bền cao: thông số Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) cao.

2. Hiệu năng hoạt động cao:

Tốc độ truy cập, đọc/ghi dữ liệu cao.
Bộ nhớ cache lớn.
Tốc độ quay (Round Per Minute - RPM) cao.
Giao diện có tốc độ cao.

3. Khả năng chống lỗi cao:

Áp dụng công nghệ phát hiện, sửa chữa và thay thế bad sectors.
Có tính năng kiểm tra lỗi.

4. Tiết kiệm năng lượng: thường dùng ổ đĩa 2.5”

Câu hỏi 3: Có mấy loại enterprise HDD?

Phân loại theo công năng, có 2 loại ổ đĩa:

1. Ổ đĩa tối ưu hiệu năng hoạt động (performance-optimized): mục đích xử lý dữ liệu càng nhanh càng tốt.

Thời gian truy tìm (seek time) thấp.
Thời gian trễ (rotational latency) thấp.
Sequential throughput >150MB/s

Ví dụ: Ổ đĩa SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) / 2.5” / 500 GB / 10.000 RPM / tốc độ 6 Gb/s

2. Ổ đĩa tối ưu khả năng lưu trữ (capacity-optimized): mục đích chứa được dữ liệu càng nhiều càng tốt.

Thời gian truy tìm (seek time) trung bình.
Thời gian trễ (rotational latency) trung bình.
Sequential throughput >100MB/s

Ví dụ: Ổ đĩa SATA (Serial ATA) / 3.5” / 4 TB / 7.200 RPM / tốc độ 3Gb/s

Câu hỏi 4: Cách so sánh/ chọn lựa enterprise HDD?

Công cụ đo IOPS là Iometer (do Intel cung cấp).

Đây là bảng IOPS tương đối:

Bốn thông số dùng để so sánh enterprise HDD:

Ví dụ so sánh:

Chúng ta có 2 HDD với những thông số sau:

Từ bảng trên, ta có thể rút ra 4 thông số so sánh như sau:

HDD	IOPS/$	IOPS/W	GB/$	GB/W
1	= 135/400 = 0.34	= 135/7.8 = 17	= 600/400 = 1.5	= 600/7.8 = 77
2	= 85/480 = 0.18	= 85/9.6 = 8.9	= 4.096/480 = 8.5	= 4.096/9.6 = 430

Thể hiện bằng biểu đồ sẽ thấy sự khác biệt giữa 2 HDD này:

Rõ ràng HDD 1 có hiệu năng hoạt động cao gần gấp đôi HDD2 – tuy nhiên, HDD 2 lại có dung lượng lưu trữ cao hơn rất nhiều lần so với HDD 1.

Do vậy HDD 2 thích hợp cho việc lưu trữ dữ liệu lớn, ít truy xuất thường xuyên. Ngược lại HDD 1 nên dùng cho những server cần truy xuất / xữ lý dữ liệu liên tục, cần tốc độ nhanh.

Một số SAN có khả năng sử dụng cả 2 loại HDD này và có thể tự động chuyển dữ liệu qua lại giữa các HDD tùy theo loại dữ liệu để tối ưu hóa hiệu năng hoạt động.

Number of International Students Attending American Colleges and Universities Continues Rising

From VOA Learning English, this is the Education Report in Special English.

A new report says more and more international students are attending colleges and universities in the United States. It also notes a large increase in the number of international students from China.

These findings are from the latest edition of the Open Doors Report. The report is a joint project of the State Department and the Institute of International Education, a non-profit educational and training organization.

The report documents the record number of international students in the United States during the twenty-eleven, twenty-twelve school year. It says more than seven hundred sixty-four thousand four-hundred such students were attending American colleges and universities during that period. That represents an increase of almost six percent compared to one year earlier.

By comparison, the number of Americans studying overseas increased by one percent.

The report says one hundred ninety-four thousand students at American colleges and universities were from China. That is an increase of more than twenty-three percent over the year before.

Peggy Blumenthal is an aide to the president of the Institute of International Education. She described the effect of the increase in Chinese students.

“Now they have been coming for some time. But this year was the highest level ever, and it really showed in the figures, driving the whole global, international undergraduate enrollment to be higher than the graduate students.”

She says many Chinese families are able to pay for the highest-quality education for their children. The children mainly choose to study in America.
“We know many of them have enough income to be able to afford to send them anywhere in the world that they want to go. And for the most part, looking around the world, Chinese students still prefer to come to the United States as their destination of choice.”

Chinese students are not the only ones who want to attend American colleges and universities. After China, India sends the second largest number of students to the United States for higher education. India has about one hundred thousand students in American schools. South Korea is third with about seventy two thousand students.

Why do so many foreign students study in the United States? Peggy Blumenthal provides one reason.

“The advantage America has is that we have a huge system and a very diverse system. So there are over four thousand universities and colleges in the United States, and what that tells us is there is still a lot of room to host international students.”

Foreign students represent less than four percent of the total student population in American higher education. Ms. Blumenthal says this means there is still a lot of room for international students.

How an Allowance Helps Children Learn About Money

Many children first learn the value of money by receiving an allowance. The purpose is to let children learn from experience (1) at an age when financial mistakes are not very costly.

The amount of money that parents give to their children to spend as they wish differs from family to family. Timing is another consideration. Some children get a weekly allowance. Others get a monthly allowance.

In any case, parents should make clear what, if anything, the child is expected to pay for with the money.

At first, young children may spend all of their allowance soon after they receive it. If they do this, they will learn the hard way (2) that spending must be done within a budget. Parents are usually advised not to offer more money until the next allowance.

The object is to show young people that a budget demands choices between spending and saving. Older children may be responsible enough to save money for larger costs, like clothing or electronics.

Many people who have written on the subject of allowances say it is not a good idea to pay your child for work around the home. These jobs are a normal part of family life.

Paying children to do extra work around the house, however, can be useful. It can even provide an understanding of how a business works.
Allowances give children a chance to experience the things they can do with money. They can share it in the form of gifts or giving to a good cause (3). They can spend it by buying things they want. Or they can save and maybe even invest it.

Saving helps children understand that costly goals require sacrifice: you have to cut costs and plan for the future.

Requiring children to save part of their allowance can also open the door to future saving and investing. Many banks offer services to help children and teenagers learn about personal finance.

Những phần mềm miễn phí hữu dụng nhất

Nhân dịp Lễ Tạ Ơn (Thanksgiving) vừa qua, trang web www.lifehacker.com đã liệt kê 50 phần mềm miễn phí hữu dụng nhất. Sau đây mình xin tóm lược lại 1 số phần mềm trong danh sách đó mà mình đang sử dụng.

1. Dropbox

Phần mềm nổi tiếng nhất để lưu trữ và đồng bộ dữ liệu bằng công nghệ đám mây.

Giả sử bạn 1 1 laptop ở công ty, 1 PC ở nhà, 1 Ipad, 1 Iphone, 1 Ipod, vvv… Dropbox sẽ giúp bạn làm cho dữ liệu trên tất cả các thiết bị trên luôn giống nhau.

Đặc biệt, mình vừa được biết hiện nay các bạn dùng Smartphone Samsung có thể đăng ký account Dropbox với dung lượng miễn phí 50GB – quá tuyệt.
